In June I will be traveling to Malawi, Africa. I am in the process of organizing lesson plans and a budget to present to the orphanage owners, Janet and Bill. I have been in touch with Bill and he loves my idea and plan. I will be traveling to the Little Field Home with donated digital cameras and equipment. I have sent a letter to many people asking for them to sponsor my project. They are purchasing the digital camera to the right of my page, taking a picture of themselves and their family, then sending it to me. I would like people to photograph themselves in order for me to have a picture of all my sponsors.
My idea is to work in the after school program teaching photography to the orphans. An example of one of my lessons is "photograph your favorite place at Little Field Home." The children will take a digital camera and complete the project. After they photograph their favorite place I will print out each child's photo on a small 4 by 6 printer so each child can start their own portfolio. The next class will be spent discussing our experience and explaining our photo. This will allow the children to start creatilvly thinking and improving their visual literacy. Bill thinks my biggest challenge will be the language barrier, but he is willing to provide me a translator. I think that I will be okay with the language. I am going to communicate in other ways such as visuals and demonstration.
I am in the process of making this happen and I am incredibly excited about the opportunity.

ReplyDeleteHi Kelley! Your proud Aunt asked me to reach out to you, since I lived in Malawi at an orphanage, in Mzuzu, a couple of years ago. I'd be happy to chat, answer any questions, encourage you to be diligent with your malaria meds, etc. ;-) If you would like to see a few shots from my visit, here's the link... http://pauls-paradigm.blogspot.com/2007/05/february-04-to-21-2007.html
